Open Album of Alfama

Notes on my photo albums. Read the Technical Notes, the Copyright and the Album history sections for detailed information.

Photographs of Alfama, Lisbon

My first photo album. Designed for 3.0 browsers, hand coded, with an interface borrowed from the presentations of the scientific papers. The imperfections and naïveté of a first attempt are clearly visible.

It's a very colourful album, straightforward to browse. It's about one of the most touristic districts in Lisbon, Portugal. Notwithstanding, I tried to capture the characteristics of the houses and the people, beyond the postcard images. The visitor is the judge on whether I succeeded or not.

Album in Portuguese, created in 1998. 30 pages with average size of 35Kb.
Recommended browsers: 3.0 or later. Minimum window: 640x480.

Open EXPO'98 Album

EXPO'98 in Lisbon, Portugal, by night and by day

The After Eight EXPO album is my opera magna. Totally bilingual and hand coded it "weighs" 4.4Mb. The first version with 89 pages and 2.4 Mb was quite large, then new pages were added (mostly daily photos) up to 123 pages.

I decided to close it and open a second album, simpler, to gather the photos on the EXPO'98 site taken after the exhibition. This album will be always open and it will grow at the pace of my visits to the site. The navigation is simple: there's an index page and the index is repeated on the bottom of each page.

The first album was a demanding task, especially the translation work, which is not exciting or rewarding. After this album, I dreamed of simple and small. That's how the third album was born: "Paris la nuit ... et le matin".

Nocturne album in Portuguese and English, created in two phases in 1998 and 1999. 123 pages with an average size of 32Kb.
Daily album in Portuguese and English with six pages and 28 photos with an average size of 24Kb. There are larger versions available for each photo.
Recommended browsers: 4.0 or later. Minimum window: 640x480.

AbrirParis 99 Album

Paris la nuit ... et le matin - photographs of Paris, France

A small and simple album, without JavaScript.
Some photos, a couple of days at home, sick and bored in bed, and the wish to make it unimpassioned shaped the design.

The sliding bar is all you need to walk along the "wall" where the photos are exhibited.

Album in French with introductory notes in Portuguese and English, created in 1999. 6 pages and 31 photos with an average size of 23Kb.
Recommended browsers: 4.0 or later. Minimum window: 800x600.

Open Belgium Album

Bienvenue en Belgique - Welcome to Belgium

A large and complex album, covering various belgium cities (Brussels , Antwerp, Bruges, Gent, ...) with pictures taken in different years and in different seasons. I studied in Belgium and I visited the country in 1988, 1993, 1994, 1995 e 2000.

I started this album in January de 2002 and I published, still incomplete, in August 2002. Beyond showing Belgium, this album is also a display of the capabilities of DHTML; it was designed to optimise the user experience. In case you have a slow connection, please be patient; I've done my best so that you feel rewarded.

Note: this album is being re-writen to make it compatible with newer Netscape Navigator 6.0 and Internet Explorer 6.0 or later, according to the new Document Object Model.

Album in French with limited translation in Portuguese and English, started in 2000. There are seven sections and 22+...+15+...+21+...+21 photos of 44Kb, on the average.
Recommended browsers: 4.0 or later. Minimum window: 800x600.
Welcome to Ispra

Benvenuto a Ispra - Welcome to Ispra

One week of work at the European Union Joint Research Centre, was the pretext for this album of Ispra, a town on the North of Italy, near Milano, on the oriental banks of Lake Maggiore.

Since I had to work all day long, I took advantage of the early dawn and late sunset to wander in the woods and around the lake, where I was enchanted by the tranquility of the scenes.

I am quite found of panoramas and I tried to integrate them on the album, using DynamicHTML (DHTML) and the new DOM specified by the W3C. Unfortunately, I could not manage to keep it compatible with browsers 4.0 (launched 1998), but it is compatible with newer browsers (Internet Explorer 5 and 6, Netscape Navigator 6 and 7 and compatibles), so I decided to publish without further delay. Users of non-compatible browsers will miss only the four panoramas.

Album in Italian and English, based on photos taken in August 2003. Launched in February 2004. There are 42 photos with 67Kb on the average and 4 panoramas with 250Kb on the average. Panorama pages require DHTML and some patience to wait until the download is concluded...
Required Browsers: Internet Explorer 5 or later, Netscape Navigator 6 or later, or compatible. Minimum window: 800x600.

Rome, from dusk to midnight

Rome, from dusk to midnight

Borrowing the architecture and technical framework of the Ispra album, it was easy and swift to build a new album: I made a trip to Rome in November and the album was published in December. This album is divided in four routes that one can follow on the screen and also on the streets.

Album in Italian and English. Created in December 2004. There are 42 photos with 48Kb on the average and 6 panoramas with 150Kb on the average. Panorama pages require DHTML and patience to wait until the download is complete...
Required Browsers: Internet Explorer 5 or later, Netscape Navigator 6 or later, or compatible. Minimum window: 800x600.
